This article overviews how the Luma Virtual Agent upholds privacy standards by managing Personally Identifiable Information (PII). It outlines the key features implemented to ensure compliance, the importance of safeguarding PII, and how Luma provides flexibility for custom configurations.

What is PII?

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) refers to any information that can identify an individual, either directly or indirectly—for example, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security Numbers, email addresses, etc. In certain contexts, PII may also include more sensitive data such as health information or financial details.

Importance of Protecting PII

Safeguarding customer personal data is critical today when data misuse is increasingly prevalent. Protecting personal information against breaches is essential to ensure that sensitive details are not exploited. Prioritizing the security of customer data ensures:

  1. Building Trust: Safeguarding PII helps build user trust, as customers increasingly expect platforms to manage their sensitive information with the highest degree of responsibility and care.

  2. Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA is essential to avoid penalties and ensure legal compliance.

  3. Mitigating Risks: Mishandling or exposing PII can lead to identity theft, financial losses, and reputational damage.

  4. Fostering Confidence: Luma VA’s robust security measures align with global privacy standards, reinforcing user confidence in the platform.

Features of PII Compliance in Luma VA

1. Auto-Detect PII/PHI Fields

Luma VA uses advanced algorithms to automatically identify PII and Protected Health Information (PHI) fields within user conversations. This feature minimizes the risk of unintentional data exposure by detecting sensitive information in real-time.

2. Mask Fields in Conversation History

To safeguard user privacy, Luma VA masks PII fields in the conversation history. This ensures that sensitive information is not visible to support agents or stored in logs, mitigating the risk of data breaches.

3. Custom PII Configurations

Luma VA provides the flexibility to define custom PII configurations, allowing organizations to tailor compliance settings to their unique requirements. Users can specify additional fields to be treated as PII based on industry-specific needs.

4. Export and Import Configurations

Luma VA supports exporting and importing PII configurations, enabling seamless sharing and application of settings across environments. This simplifies the setup process and ensures consistency in PII management.

Out of the box (OOTB), Luma VA recognizes and manages several common PII fields such as Names (first and last names), Email addresses, Phone numbers, Physical addresses, National identification numbers (e.g., Social Security numbers, Aadhaar numbers), and more.
An administrator can customize the OOTB configurations and create new ones as needed.
